The Project Akita OS (Orange OS) was started with the intent to design a lightweight operating system. It contains a small kernel designed for those interested in the low-level, practical aspects of building an x86 system. The host development environment is designed to work around the Bochs x86 emulator, so that you can easily test changes to the kernel.

System-Down::Rescue is a free downloadable live
distribution. It is designed to recover damaged
file-systems, copying the data around other
physical discs or networks, or burning them on a
CD-ROM, using cdrecord. It features a working
hardware detection system.

rpm livelinuxcd is a set of ISO images and a
toolkit. The first CD image is a basic live CD
with X/KDE, GNOME, twm, VPN/DSL, kickstart, and
other tools based on RPM packages. The second CD
image includes a server with ssh, Apache, PHP,
MySQL, Samba, Squid, and more, but without X11.
The toolkit consists of shell scripts to create
new CDs from RPM package lists or comps files.
Rocks is a complete "cluster on a CD" solution for
x86 and IA64 Red Hat Linux COTS clusters. Building
a Rocks cluster does not require any experience in
clustering, yet a cluster architect will find a
flexible and programmatic way to redesign the
entire software stack just below the surface
(appropriately hidden from the majority of users).
Although Rocks includes the tools expected from
any clustering software stack (PBS, Maui, GM
support, Ganglia, etc), it is unique in its
simplicity of installation.
Puppy Linux is a Linux distribution that is about 100 megabytes, yet it includes a complete set of graphical applications, combined with extensive utility applications. Puppy was created from scratch, file-by-file, optimized for size at every step. text editing. It aims to provide a free
alternative to commercial XML editors. It has been
reported to run correctly on Linux, Windows, Mac
OS X, Solaris, and FreeBSD. There are many
installers for platform convenience.
