GroundWork Monitor Community Edition can give you insight into your computing infrastructure, allowing you to see the current and historical states of all your computers: servers, desktops, and laptops, all of your network devices, all of your services (like TCP/IP and Web services), and all of your applications (like mail servers and database apps). You can choose to be alerted when something goes awry via pager, SMS, email, or phone, and even set up automatic restarts or fall-overs.

The Logfile Navigator, lnav for short, is a curses-based tool for viewing and analyzing log files. The value added by lnav over text viewers or editors is that it takes advantage of any semantic information that can be gleaned from the log file, such as timestamps and log levels. Using this extra semantic information, lnav can do things like interleaving messages from different files, generate histograms of messages over time, and provide hotkeys for navigating through the file. These features are meant to allow the user to quickly and efficiently focus on problems.

Epylog is a log notifier and parser that periodically tails system logs on Unix systems, parses the output in order to present it in an easily readable format (parsing modules currently exist only for Linux), and mails the final report to the administrator. It can run daily or hourly. Epylog is written specifically for large clusters where many systems log to a single loghost using syslog or syslog-ng.

python-jabberbot is a Jabber bot framework for
Python that makes it easy to write simple Jabber
bots. One can use these Jabber bots to provide
information about running systems, to make Web
sites interact with Jabber-enabled visitors, or
notify the bot owner about updates or changes that
are monitored with custom Python scripts.

socklog cooperates with the runit package to create a small and secure replacement for syslogd. socklog supports system logging through Unix domain sockets (/dev/log) and UDP sockets (0.0.0.0:514) with the help of runit's runsvdir, runsv, and svlogd. socklog provides a different network logging concept, and also does log event notification. svlogd has built in log file rotation based on file size, so there is no need for any cron jobs to rotate the logs. socklog is small, secure, and reliable.

ICPLD (Internet Connection Performance Logging Daemon) is a connection monitor that sends ICMP requests to IP addresses of your choice and monitors if your machine has a working network connection. It logs failed attempts to reach the hosts, and will stamp a log as soon as a reply is received. It keeps track of when and for how long the connection was unavailable and records both total down time and each occasion of interrupted connection. It supports IPv6 and can execute a command whenever a connection goes up or down, which is useful for alerting users.

LineControl allows you to remotely control the Internet connection of a Linux masquerading server using multiple clients. It takes care with the number of clients using the connection and decides upon this number whether the connection should be up or down. The clients show the time the connection is up and throughput statistics. Different connection types are supported, such as analog modems, ISDN, or even cable modems and ADSL devices.
RRDutil is a a tool to collect statistics (typically every 5
minutes) from multiple servers, store the values in RRD
databases (using RRDtool), and plot out pretty graphs to a
Web server on demand. The graph types shown include CPU,
memory, disk (space and I/O), Apache, MySQL queries and
query types, email, Web hits, and more.

SRG (Squid Report Generator) is a log file
analyzer and report generator for the Squid Web
proxy. It was created to allow easy integration
with authentication systems such as those that are
used for squid itself. It is fast and flexible,
and can report details down to the individual
files fetched.

Logfmon monitors a set of log files and processes
messages based on a set of regexps. When a message
matches, a command may be executed or the message
may be ignored. Messages that are unmatched are
batched together and emailed every so often.

IPTables log analyzer displays Linux 2.4 iptables logs (rejected, accepted, and masqueraded packets) in a nice HTML page. The reports it produces are easy to read and understand, reducing the manual analysis time. They contain statistics on packets and links to more detailed information on a given host, port, or domain.

emlog is a Linux kernel module that makes it easy to access the most recent (and only the most recent) output from a process. It works just like "tail -f" on a log file, except that the storage required never grows. This can be useful in embedded systems where there isn't enough memory or disk space for keeping complete log files, but the most recent debugging messages are sometimes needed.
