Hi,

Thanks for your response!

Bingo! Everything is fine -- except that I now have to figure out
what in my .emacs file is giving me troubles. I thought I had
isolated all the lines dealing with the coding system, but when I
commented them out I still had the problem. I never thought to get
rid of the whole .emacs file.

Seiji> Do you use "Help > Carbon Emacs Package > Mule-UCS Unicode
Seiji> Support" in the menu bar? If so, please turn it off.

It was off.

Thanks very much for your help. Is there a more pedagogical
explanation of the coding sytems and how Emacs deals with them than
the one found in the Emacs Info directory, I'd appreciate being
pointed to it.

Many thanks again,

Jose
