SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, handheld scanner, video and still cameras, framegrabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is public domain and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The source code is written for UNIX (including Linux) and is available under the GPL, but commercial applications and backends are welcome. The package contains the libraries, net support, and scanimage. The X frontends xscanimage and xcam can be found in sane-frontends.

There are two new backends: "mustek_pp_ccd" for Mustek parport CCD scanners and "plustek_pp" for Plustek parport scanners. These backends have been updated: avision, canon630u, epson, fujitsu, gphoto2, gt68xx, hp, hp5400, mustek, plustek, snapscan, teco2, test, umax, umax_pp. There have been networking and USB fixes and updates, and there is better support for threading now. MS Windows (Cygwin) is partially supported. Other fixes and additions include portability, translations (Bulgarian, Czech, and Italian), and scanner descriptions.

Support was added for the following scanners: HP 54XX series, IBM 2456, Ricoh IS-410, IS-420, and IS-430, and Mustek BearPaw 1200F. Several other backends were updated. IPv6 support was added, along with SCSI support for Mac OS X. USB access improvements were made. Portability fixes were made for Irix, Mac OS X, OS/2 and Linux/m68k. New nl and no translations were added, and existing translations were updated.
