MacPorts makes the world of open source software
available to your Mac. There are over 5600
software titles ("ports"), each one installable
with a single command. This is probably the
biggest, most up to date open source software
collection for Mac OS X. MacPorts works much like
the ports collections of the major BSD operating
systems.

This version is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The CPU architecture to build for is now configurable. Performance and memory usage improvements were made. The -y option was added for performing a dry-run. "port search" is now more flexible. "port upgrade" now always follows the right dependencies. "port info" and "port variants" indicate selected and default variants and conflicts between variants. Ports can be marked as conflicting, and conflicts will be detected before the install process starts. Proxy information can now be obtained from System Preferences. MacPorts can be configured to drop root privileges when not needed.
