PicMonger is a GUI-driven app that scans a specified Usenet newsgroup for binary attachments. Any attachments encoded with uuencode or in MIME-base64 format are decoded into the current working directory. Lists of frequently used servers and groups are saved on a per-user basis and easily accessed/edited via the GUI. HTML preview pages (like contact sheets) can be automatically generated on the fly. PicMonger also remembers where you were between sessions so scanning resumes where you left off.

or two users. It is intended to supply spool and
offline news reading for a configured selection of
newsgroups. S-news does the minimum required to

nntpfs is a FUSE module for mounting the data
offered by NNTP servers. Read-only access to the
servers is provided. The Network News Transfer
Protocol or NNTP is an Internet application
protocol for the distribution of news and
occasionally binary files. Usenet represents the
most common usage of the NNTP protocol. The
Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE) interface allows
user application code to create its own
filesystems and publish them using kernel support.

system and Usenet. It allows an ordinary user with

JFreshmeat-NNTP is the first released mini-app to use an NNTP class being developed for a Java-only NNTP-based newsreader. It connects to freshmeat's NNTP server, and retrieves the headers, displaying them in the top pane of a two-pane window. Double-clicking on a particular announcement will retrieve the text of that announcement and display it in the bottom pane. The initial class is very short, calling a general purpose newsgroup monitor class. It can be adapted to monitor any server/group very easily. Future plans for the JFreshmeat-NNTP code include SOCKS support, saving article data, persistant storage of articles, UI improvements, timed polling for monitoring updates. It may also be rolled into the general purpose newsreader as a side-feature eventually.
NewsLib is a library of Perl modules for managing
Network News services. It's meant to be used for
code-reuse and sharing when writing news-based
applications. It includes Net::NNTP::Client

The ausadmin project is designed to automate the
maintenance of USENET newsgroup hierarchies (such
as aus.*) and provide end-users with useful online
information regarding all the newsgroups in the
hierarchy as well as proposals (Request For
Discussion and Call For Votes). It consists of a
software package and a Web site package. The
software implements Perl classes which maintain
data structures representing existing newsgroups
and proposals for new newsgroups, and the Web site
is mostly dynamically generated by Perl CGI and
PHP code which reads the data structures mentioned
above. The Web site is intended to provide the
user with as much information as possible about
the newsgroups which are under management.
MessageViewer is a very simple GTK program that
fetches and views one Usenet news message based on
its message-id. Its main use is to quicky look at
one article in cases where opening a real news
reader and trying to locate it based on msg-id is
too much of a hassle. It can also read the
message-id in news:<id> or news:id URL
formats, and can therefore be set to handle such
protocol requests. It does not support
authentication of any kind at the moment.
nntp//rss is a Java RSS feed aggregator for NNTP clients. It allows RSS feeds to be read through any standard GUI or text-based NNTP newsreader.
noffle is a news (nntp) server optimized for few users and low speed dial-up connections to the Internet. It adds offline reading capabilities to existing news readers.
