The Usenet Binary Harvester (ubh) is a Perl console application which automatically discovers, downloads, and decodes single-part and multi-part Usenet binaries. It automatically assembles multi-part binaries, provides searching via Perl regular expression syntax, and provides a pre-selection capability whereby the user can interactively choose which binaries to download. Ubh uses a standard .newsrc file to control which groups to process, and uses the .newsrc to keep track of articles already processed. It also handles uuencoded binaries, MIME attachments, and yEnc encoded binaries.

zfec is a fast, portable, and programmable
implementation of erasure coding. It includes a C
library, a Python library, and a command-line
tool. Erasure coding is also known as "forward
error correction", which is the generation of
redundant blocks of information such that if some
blocks are lost then the original data can be
recovered from the remaining blocks. The RAID-5
algorithm is an erasure code, but while RAID-5 can
recover from the loss of any one element, zfec can
be parameterized to choose in advance the number
of elements whose loss it can tolerate.

NewsCache is a free cache server for USENET News. NewsCache acts to news reading clients like a news server, except that it stores only those articles that have been requested by at least one client. NewsCache targets problems of the current News System like network bandwidth consumption or the IO load caused by news clients.

Net_NNTP is a PHP/PEAR library for communication with NNTP servers. Net_NNTP handles connection and protocol-level commands (RFC977), including many non-standard commands (RFC2980), via a user-friendly API which hides the actual NNTP commands/syntax. Some knowledge about NNTP and general knowledge about email and MIME is required, since parsing of content and headers is left up to the user. Net_NNTP allows advanced users direct usage of NNTP commands via the separate protocol implementation. Net_NNTP includes a fully-functional NNTP to HTML gateway demo application.

Newsstar fetches news and posts it to a local news server: INN, s-news, and sn are supported. What makes newsstar special is that it can make
multiple simultaneous connections, not only to one server, but to several, supporting up to 10
"threads". Before fetching each article, it checks
that it hasn't already been downloaded by another
thread or in a previous session. It can also
"pipeline" article requests to make better use of
available bandwidth. SSL is supported.

stdnoj is a cross-platform C++ class library that
includes classes for using portable strings,
databases, SMTP, POP, NNTP, arrays, files,
